Commando Photozaic – artwork statement

My award-winning Photozaics are inspired by where Van Gogh’s textures meet Ansel Adam’s simplicity near the intersection of Bob Ross’ healing vibes. This technique is a labor-intensive multi-step process and starts with my journey into nature; recording the landscapes that spark my eye whether it be rolling hills or a babbling brook.  After modifying the composition, I take the print and head to the stained-glass shop to find matching colors.  I cut the glass by hand by taking smaller shards and placing them in a rock tumbler to remove sharp edges while larger pieces are sanded by hand and assembled in the frame.  Grouting finishes the artwork allowing the detail of each cut glass shape to add texture to my art.  This series I call commando as for me it’s liberating to see the photo in sync with the frame no boundaries separating these two mediums from dancing: just beautiful fluid flow.

About exhibition:

This collection of images captures the spirit of exploration, inviting photographers to share the emotions, stories, and moments that have shaped their journeys. Whether venturing to far-off destinations or discovering the hidden gems within their own communities, each photograph reflects the unique perspectives that arise from immersing ourselves in new environments and cultures. As we wind down the year, we celebrate the adventures that define us and invite you to relive the essence of travel through this inspiring visual experience.

I was blessed to have two images selected for this online exhibition, Beach Life and Watercolor Tree.

Beach Life- digital infrared photography

Life is like an Ocean or in this case a Great Lake; sometimes it can be calm, rough waves, gorgeous blue waters, or jet black with white caps but at the end of the day it is always beautiful.   Simple views like this help me recharge my soul, releasing the creativity like endorphins after a workout so I can share my visual art to the world.

Watercolor Tree- I phone fine art photography

Steamy Monday morning here in Cabin Country Minnesota.  At first glance, this looks dreary but find the peace this dew-covered window gives.  Mother Nature grabs my attention again and gives me something to see that I haven’t paid attention to in the past.  I give thanks for simple blessings like this image, I find beauty in the storm; I find my inner peace.

Autumn is Summer’s last party celebrating a colorful season, so step outside and participate in Mother Nature’s gorgeous grand finale! For me, it’s like the trees are excited to shed the old in a colorful magical way; getting ready for their much-needed hibernation to rejuvenate and start fresh coming spring.

The great news just keeps pouring in!  I have two more works accepted into the Cabin Art show just minutes from my home!

Accepted works:

End of Day

Sunsets are proof that no matter what happens, every day can end beautifully by Kristen Butler- Go out and be one with Mother Nature; allow her to show you we are all one with the universe.  So, fill your heart with beautiful images that keep your Soul’s light shining bright!  End of Day reminds me of a symphony, where all participants flow in harmony and my camera is the composer- one of the best gifts given to me from nature.

Beach Life

Life is like an Ocean or in this case a Great Lake; sometimes it can be calm, rough waves, gorgeous blue waters, or jet black with white caps but at the end of the day it is always beautiful.   Simple views like this help me recharge my soul, releasing creativity like endorphins after a workout so I can share my visual art to the world.

Hint of Gold

Robert Frost wrote this perfectly:  Nothing Gold Can Stay.  Nature’s first green is gold, her hardest hue to hold.  Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then the leaf subsides to leaf So Eden Sank to grief, so dawn goes down today.  Nothing gold can Stay.  This view recharges my soul, I love sitting on my parent’s shoreline watching the sunsets and June didn’t disappoint. There’s no better way to reflect on a beautiful day than watching the sunset, knowing tomorrow will be just as amazing.  I enjoy my time spent with Mom especially after Dad passed away a few years back.  It’s funny how life’s perspectives change after you lose a parent.  I know that someday my time witnessing these beautiful sunsets on my parent’s shoreline will end but they will forever be locked inside my heart.

Thank Attleboro Arts Museum and Lennon Hernandez Wolcott for accepting this work.

Accepted work: Orange Watercolor – Commando photozaic

The sunset silhouettes of the islands have been like no other I’ve seen on my travels, knowing you are in borderland country (Minnesota/Canada) when you see the trees bouncing off the evening sky.  In my eyes each sunset is unique and unlike the previous day.  Colors from sunsets change just like the seasons.  Late summer sunsets have the deepest orange fading into the twilight blue.

Sometimes the path in life is not clearly defined.  The only thing you can do is breathe deeply, put your faith in the universe, and take the first step.  Life’s road will have curves, enjoy them as they will bring you to wonderful places if you surrender.  Road trips allow my mind to wander and absorb what Mother Nature shows me.  I especially love watching the landscape change from mountains to desert; from city to Rolling country farms; brightly colored flowers to drab gray foggy scenes.  All of these are gifts from her, so give thanks.  Get out in nature and recharge your soul!

Pallet Mountain

My soul was itching to get out and wonder; but instead of looking at the natural landscape, a nudge from the universe to photograph industrial landscapes.  I wanted to bring attention to human consumption and waste of our natural resources.  What is man trying to do here?  Create a mountain of trash for the gods?  Or is it paying respect to Mother Nature trying to recycle what was taken from her?  What do you see?

Below is a quote that fits this work of art.

Dance with the waves, move with the sea.  Let the rhythm of the water set your soul free. – Christy Ann Martine.  I spend hours sitting on the sand becoming one with my surroundings listening to the sounds and watching the constant everchanging waves crashing the shore helping me recharge my soul.  It’s nature’s symphony that warms my heart.

Works of Excellence

The Studio Door
3867 4th Avenue San Diego, CA 92103
Exhibition Dates: April 27 – May 27, 2023

Website: http://thestudiodoor.com/

My work is a mixed media joining together my two loves of photography and mosaics that I call Photozaics.  Just recently I experimented with matte less print as it has been suggested in the past, but this time I listened to Emily Schiffer’s suggestion from a recent portfolio review, and this is the result.  This line of photozaics, I’m calling commando-as for me its liberating to see my photo dancing in sync with the frame.

Four of my Commando photozaics were accepted into Works of Excellence exhibition at The Studio Door gallery.  Wolf n Bear will be physically in the gallery; Gateway to Racepoint beach will be on their website and Breakpoint at Racepoint and Forest of Birch will be included in the catalog.   Honored and humbled to not have just one accepted but four works accepted into this exhibition.

Wolf n Bear

Some people come into our lives and quickly go, some stay for a while, leaving footprints on our hearts and we are never the same- by Flavia Weedn.  This image reminds me of the ones that left their footprints on my soul.

Gateway to Racepoint Beach

Gateway can offer up an over welcoming feeling of “come on in”.  This scene offers that feeling with a side of warning to those that don’t pay attention to their environment.  I don’t mind the locals and will respect their home.  If I’m not meant to be in the ocean I will sit quietly on the shore watching a movie of waves play on repeat for my pleasure.

Breakpoint at Racepoint Beach

Dance with the waves, move with the sea.  Let the rhythm of the water set your soul free. – Christy Ann Martine.  Sitting at the ocean’s beach I spend hours just zoning out to the sounds and everchanging views of waves crashing the shore help recharge my soul.  It’s nature’s symphony that warms me at my heart.

Forest of Birch

“In Celtic Mythology the silver birch tree is sacred and symbolizes new beginnings and protection.”  This quote speaks to me and helping me understand why I love Birch trees and my Irish Heritage.  This image was taken at Jay Cooke State Park in February 2012 just a few months before this region received an unpreceded amount of rain in a 24-hour period; forever changing the landscape of this park forever.

White Daisies photoziac 14x16x1

Daisies are a true sign of spring:  A lovely reminder of how beautiful change can truly be.

Sleeping Bear Beach photozaic 16x14x1

The Ashininaabek people used the Mother Bear as a landmark and tell the story about how she came to be there.  Long ago, along the Wisconsin shoreline, a mother bear and her two cubs were driven into Lake Michigan by a raging forest fire. The bears swam for many hours, but soon the cubs tired. Mother bear reached the shore first and climbed to the top of a high bluff to watch and wait for her cubs. The cubs drowned within sight of the shore. The Great Spirit created two islands to mark the spot where the cubs disappeared and then created a solitary dune to represent the eternal vigil of mother bear.   These images reminded me of gulf coast just minus the salty ocean air.

I watched as morning fog kissed the landscape, slowly burning off showing Lake Michigan’s beautiful teal blue waters.  While I was exploring Sleeping Bear Dunes, I had the story above playing around in my head; carefully documenting the landscape with both color and infrared cameras.

Favorite photo of 2022

Reflections of Fall, taken in Bolton, MA

Early in 2022, I was out with friends having dinner and I put my mirrored glasses down on the table and loved the reflected image.  That sparked the idea that I would do this on my travels and create a new collection of “Reflected” works.  The below image is filled with bright colors, shallow depth of field, and of course, no photographer reflected in the image.  This you must stand in just the right place to avoid “capture”, LOL.  I do most of my work in camera, so this has little editing down in Lightroom.  Stay Tuned for more work to come…

How can I construct an image that moves beyond the surface? Photozaics, of course!

My award-winning Photozaics are inspired where Van Gogh’s textures meet Ansel Adam’s simplicity near the intersection of Bob Ross’ healing vibes. This technique is a labor-intensive multi-step process and starts out with my journey into nature; recording the landscapes that I spark my eye may it be rolling hills, or a babbling brook.  After modifying the composition, I take the print and head to the stained-glass shop to find matching colors.  I cut the glass by hand taking smaller shards, and placing them in a rock tumbler to remove sharp edges while larger pieces are sanded by hand and assembled the frame.  Grouting finishes the artwork allowing the detail of each cut glass shape to add texture to my art.

Art heals the mind, body, and soul.  Research has shown a correlation between participating in cultural activities, like Crafting, visiting art galleries, and attending concerts have increased rates of good health.  By creating Photozaics, it is my hope to connect with you through a multi-sensory mixed media presentation that tickles sight and encourages your touch.

My image selected is Refugee Trees- Story unedited

The Trees are walking away from the forest they’ve only known, fleeing invasive species that are killing them. Like refugees wandering into the unknown seeking safe grounds to flourish.   I dedicate this picture to all the refugees worldwide who have endured this journey’s pain.  I’ve donated money to humanitarian aides but still feel helpless as I watch this war unfold on Tv in my safe home.  I will pay higher gas prices and bite my tongue as this is a small price for what Putin is doing to Ukraine and the world.    I will cut back on other areas, like dining out, and buying unnecessary “stuff” and put that money towards Humanitarian Aid to help the people of Ukraine.   I write that because I saw a Ukrainian woman on the news say to the world, “appreciate the little things in life like seeing blue skies and breathing fresh air.”  I do appreciate the little things in life and do this also in honor of her request, as I have a roof over my head and food in my fridge and for that I’m grateful. My advice to you, the next time you bitch about inflation for the cost of food and gas think of Ukraine and what they are going through, and SHUT UP!

My exhibition will be a combination of my collections Spirit of the land meets Sanctuary of the Soul.

” Spirit of the Land” was documented in infrared black and white photography.  They portray an otherworldly, surreal, almost dreamlike state that feels three-dimensional.  These images are matted and framed in simple black, and they blend nicely with my award-winning Photozaics from the “Sanctuary from the soul “collection.  The inspiration came from Van Gogh’s textures meet Ansel Adam’s simplicity near the intersection of Bob Ross’ healing vibes. This technique is a labor-intensive multi-step process and starts out with my journey into nature; recording the landscapes that spark my eye may it be rolling hills or a babbling brook.  After modifying the composition, I take the print and head to the stained-glass shop to find matching colors.  I cut the glass by hand taking smaller shards, and placing them in a rock tumbler to remove sharp edges while larger pieces are sanded by hand and assembled into the frame.  Grouting finishes the artwork allowing the detail of each cut glass shape adding the texture to my art.

Small Stones Festival of the Arts

Wishes or Weeds?

This image reminded me of my childhood and every time I saw a Dandelion, I would pick it and make a wish.  So, in this image, I see wishes and choose to hold on to my innocent belief that they are not weeds but wishes delivered to the Universe via a simple breeze.  Next time you see a Dandelion, stop, pick it, and make your wish! Only true believers will see their wishes materialize!  Today I wish for peace and equality for all.

Gallery owners and art collectors I will be in Massachusetts from October 9th through 29th if you would like to see samples of my work, I will have some with me.   Some samples will be from both collections Spirit of the land Infrared images and Sanctuary for the soul photozaics.

Sanctuary for the Soul

Crissy Beach

Sometimes you just need to surrender to the scene and get pulled into the wonders it has to offer your senses.  That is what happened to me when I came upon this boardwalk while walking the beaches in San Francisco’s Marina District.  The boardwalk pulls me to the water and my eyes circle around the remnants of old docks, Sausalito, and Alcatraz off in the distance.  I can still smell the salty sea air and hear the foghorn sounding off warning ships of the bridge when I look at this photo.

I will be on the 3rd floor with many other artists selling my Art.

I create multi-sensory wall art that engages your curiosity of what lies beyond; what you see is personal to you.  Creating art helps me connect with you, exhibiting my ability to make you feel like you are there with me. They inspire your desire to touch my art, so you can view and feel it at the same time.  My surroundings play a big role in my photography story.  When I’m out in nature with my camera, it’s through texture, lines, colors, etc., that I get my inspiration.  I primarily use color images to capture the vibrancy of Mother Nature’s glory, but when the mood and setting are just right, I will photograph in infrared.  This style of photography brings another worldly look, almost a dreamlike state that has a 3D effect.

My photozaics are a perfect mixture of Van Gogh meets Ansel Adams and Bob Ross.  My technique is a labor-intensive process and starts out with my journey into nature; capturing the images that I will make into a photozaic.  With print in hand, I head to the local stain glass store, making sure to color match glass to the image.  All glass cutting is done by hand, smaller pieces are tumbled with larger pieces and sanded by hand before assembling into the finished work.

Come on out and see what new works of art I have and along with that I’m selling infrared matted prints and offering them in simple elegant black frames, and photo cards.

As the wood rafters decay, they provide a source of life for future plants to grow on.  Mother Nature has been working hard to eliminate the man-made structure but it’s not going down without a fight.  Awe-inspiring to see nature reclaiming Her space that humans abandoned a long time ago.   My eye immediately caught sight of the lime green moss, but when I approached to get a closer look, I was surprised that the nails were still intact, standing the test of time.

Come check out my hybrid exhibition One last road trip leads to Sanctuary for the Soul. This Exhibition is a mix of my Photozaics framed art offered in color and infrared photographs images with a sprinkle of my black n white Infrared photos matted in black with simple black framing.

As we approach 1 million deaths from Covid in our country, we are all challenged with finding ways to process our grief. In 2019 I lost my father and decided to take his ashes on one last road trip.  Or, at least, that was my plan, but I then decided to include him in every trip I’ve taken since.  The photographs I am taking are my way of thanking him for giving me my eye for photography. Going on these road trips is a memorial to him in appreciation of the ever-changing landscapes.   I went out into the world with an open but broken, heart looking to find peace in Mother Nature’s arms.  I’ve found her to be a great place to recharge my soul in the past.

The viewer will be surrounded by nature photos with mosaics that will open them up to another plane of consciousness. The addition of mosaic frames will awaken your curiosity about what lies beyond the frame.  Each viewer will have a different experience.  This exhibition is a place for visitors to recharge their souls from daily stresses, sparking their senses and curiosity.   As I create my photozaics I often lose myself in the process.  The viewers of my work also find the details of the mosaic will draw them into the photo where they will find a sanctuary for their soul.   I truly believe art heals the mind, body, and soul.  The Norwegian University of Science and Technology discovered a definite correlation between participating in cultural activities, i.e. creating art, visiting art galleries, and attending concerts with increased rates of good health.

Pine Edged Road
Sized medium
PER20x17x12021-1

Sometimes the path in life is not clearly defined.  The only thing you can do is to breathe deeply, put your faith in the universe, and take the first step.

Golden Gate Bridge

I headed to San Francisco for an art show and decided to give myself a few extras days to explore this great City by the Bay. As the fog lifted, I snapped photos of the various areas in the Marina District.  When the fog burnt off, I walked the area again up a long hill to capture this photograph.  Nature really makes all these colors work together.

My soul was itching to get out and wonder; but instead of looking to the natural landscape, a nudge from the universe to photograph industrial landscapes.  I Waited to bring attention to human consumption and waste of our natural resources.  What is man trying to do here?  Create a mountain for the gods of trash?  Paying respect to Mother Nature trying to recycle what was taken from her?  What do you see?

Campering life is to be out in nature recharging your soul appreciating the simple pleasures that life gives you.  Make sure the paths you take in life have dirt, grass, rocks, and mud.    The quote below speaks to me.  Now I see the secret of making the best person, it is to grow in the open air and to eat and sleep with the earth. Road trips recharge my soul and fuel my creativity.  On this road trip, I headed to Sleepy Eye, MN where they have the nicest owners of Sleepy Eye stain glass shop.  The drive takes a few hours to get there, and I enjoy taking the single-lane county highways.  The landscape dotted with farmhouses, newly planted crops, gently rolling hills, small creeks with forest groves.  I was blessed with Bob Ross kind of clouds, Horses greeting me to say good morning.

This scene captivated my eyes as the hint of lime green sprouts just breaking the jet-black soil accompanied the Seeds Mother Nature planted earlier in the Spring.

Red Farm Landscaped in Corn

Heading south on Wisconsin’s highway 35 I explored the Driftless area (definition-having no aim or direction: free from glacial drift a section driftless except for loess deposits).  Highway 35 winds along the Mississippi River following its path south.  I made it to Alma and headed back north on county roads like I, KK, and 25 which snaked through the Driftless area hills and valleys.  I explored this region capturing the farm life landscapes from corn crops to cattle grazing in the fields as my soul recharged from the stresses of my work week.  I love to get lost on country roads and just absorb the scenery like a sponge.

Farming is not just for growing crops; it is for the cultivation… of human beings! – Masanobu Fukuoka.  I admire those who choose the greater good and create nourishment for everyone to enjoy.  In conclusion, I was humbled by all the hard work the farmer put into his field and blessed to be able to capture such a picturesque scene which reminded me of a Folk-art painting.

It is a creative process; we must first plant the seeds and nurture them along the way to ensure their full growth, as they will in turn provide us with nourishment, which is essential not just for survival but for success.

Event hours:

11-5 noon – 8 pm
11-6 noon – 4 pm Details:

ACW leader, Natalie Mcguire, submits her unique photography merging into her mosaic frameworks to galleries all over the country. The work, Bridge to Wonder, was accepted into the exhibition at the Arcadia Art Show in Tyler, Texas. When Texas passed the law denying the marginalized their reproductive freedom (the wealthy can travel across state lines), Natalie felt compelled to take action.  She wrote to the curator of the exhibit that, respectfully, she could not send her art into a state which would support such a trampling of “the right to choose”.  Much to her amazement, the curator of Arcadia Art Show, Dace Kidd, responded that she understood and asked if she could install her statement on a black background, framed, in the place her work would have been hung. This was an encouraging outcome, but then so what?  Who is this punishing?  ACW is going two steps further to help those who need reproductive services NOW.

ACW is also aware that a boycott of all things Texan punishes all Texans.  If you would like to help the women currently in crisis, please send a donation to The Lilith Fund – supports the right of all Texans to make their own reproductive choices, regardless of income. https://www.lilithfund.org/donate

My perspective on Nourish:

Seeds Planted: Planting seeds and nurturing them, making sure that they grow, is the key to nourishment of one’s mind, body, and soul.

Red Farm landscaped in Corn:  As you can see, nurturing and caring for your seeds will ensure that they provide you with nourishment.

It is a creative process; we must first plant the seeds and nurture them along the way to ensure their full growth, as they will in turn provide us with nourishment, which is essential not just for survival but for success.
